Kazakhstan's renewable energy market is accelerating, the United Nations Development Programme said, according to Kazakhstan capital network on June 8.
In the past three years, the power generation capacity of renewable energy in Kazakhstan has doubled, from 1.1 billion kwh in 2017 to 2.4 billion kwh in 2019,and it is planned to reach 3.15 billion kwh in 2020. At the same time, the share of renewable power generation in total power generation is still small, about 2.3% in 2019.
In the vision of green economic transformation, the Kazakh government proposed to increase the proportion of renewable energy power generation to 3% by 2020.
According to the data of the Ministry of energy of Kazakhstan, in the first quarter of 2020, renewable energy generated 548.4 million electricity,
a year-on-year increase of 58%, accounting for 1.8% of the total power generation of the country. At present, there are 37 solar (3.290, - 0.02, - 0.60%) power stations, 37 hydropower stations, 22 wind power stations and 5 biomass power stations in Kazakhstan. In 2019, the total installed capacity of renewable energy projects will reach 1050mw, and it is expected to increase to 1655mw by the end of 2020. In the first quarter of 2020, wind power accounted for 45% of renewable energy generation, followed by solar power (35.7%) and small hydropower (19%).
According to USAID, Kazakhstan has great potential to develop wind power and solar energy, with an average wind speed of 4-5 M / s at a height of 30 m in half of its territory and 2200-3000 hours of sunshine throughout the year. According to the United Nations Development Programme, Kazakhstan can develop almost all renewable energy technologies. In addition to wind power, solar energy and hydropower, biogas power generation, biomass power generation and geothermal power generation should also be actively used. Compared with other renewable energy sources, the development of wind power and solar energy is cheaper, more widely distributed and has greater potential. The development potential of Kazakhstan's wind power can reach 920 billion kwh, which is one order of magnitude higher than the current domestic total power generation and consumption.
